La actriz y dramaturga Alessandra García, reconocida por su talento con un premio MAX, join forces this summer with the Boca Agua company, led by writer and photographer Violeta Niebla and director and poet Cristian Alcaraz. Together, they are participating in the Artistic Residencies program organized by the Junta de Andalucía, in collaboration with the Diputación Provincial de Málaga. Until August 17, they will utilize the facilities at La Térmica to delve intensively into their theatrical proposals, ‘La obra del mar’ and ‘Parque,’ which will be showcased at the contemporary cultural center in October. Additionally, they will conduct two workshops—one focused on interpretation and the other on community text mediation and creation—as part of their residency experience.
The presentation of this residency was made on Wednesday by Antonia Ledesma, the Vice President of Citizenship and Territorial Balance of the Diputación de Málaga, and Violeta Hernández, the director of the Andalusian Institute of Scenic Arts and Music, who shared the stage with the participating artists. Ledesma emphasized that La Térmica is an "ideal place for artists to immerse themselves in their projects, providing a perfect moment to set other routines aside and deeply connect with their creative impulses." She remarked that this residency allows for the time and space necessary for creativity to flourish, resulting in initiatives that will engage and inspire audiences.
In her address, Violeta Hernández highlighted that the residency program is being implemented for the first time in Málaga, which has become one of the leading creative hubs in Andalucía in recent years. She noted the high number of local artists applying for the residency, including not only Alessandra Garcia, Violeta Niebla, and Cristian Alcaraz, but also Tania Sánchez Jiménez and Alberto Cortés, whose projects have also been selected for residencies in other venues.
Alessandra García and ‘La obra del mar’
Alessandra García is set to present her project ‘La obra del mar,’ a piece that has been developing in her mind since 2015, as she prepared through other projects to approach it with maturity and commitment. Scheduled for premiere next summer, its initial draft will be presented on October 17 at La Misericordia beach, alongside dancer and performer José Alberto Lucena.
‘La obra del mar’ will break conventional boundaries by staging performances at night on an actual beach, accentuating sensory experiences and emotional connections with the audience. The work aims to create an intimate yet public atmosphere, exploring the unspoken rules that govern shared spaces. Alessandra expressed her keen interest in how we occupy these spaces.
On October 15, she will also conduct a workshop titled ‘Zambullá,’ aimed at both amateur and professional practitioners of live arts, focusing on the unique micro-universes our beaches encapsulate. The workshop is limited to 20 participants, who must come prepared with a memorized ten-line text to engage fully in the experience.
Boca Agua and ‘Parque’
On the other hand, Boca Agua, comprised of Violeta Niebla and Cristian Alcaraz, is bringing their project ‘Parque’ to the residency. This interactive piece will unfold a day in the life of public spaces, utilizing dialogues and actions generated by community members through mediation.
Niebla and Alcaraz plan to compose a text in real-time on stage, capturing the essence of this space where collective stories and interactions come to life. Niebla explained that while ‘Parque’ will not be entirely participatory, there will be a level of engagement and exchange with the audience.
Currently in its initial phase, the project will allow Niebla and Alcaraz to brainstorm, experiment, and refine their ideas during their time at La Térmica. The public will get a glimpse of their work on October 4 during the RED Friday event, while a workshop titled ‘Lo que dicen en el parque’ will take place on September 27 and 28.
Artistic Residency Program
The Artistic Residency program, organized by the Andalusian Agency of Cultural Institutions through the Andalusian Institute of Scenic Arts and Music, aims to actively contribute to the development of projects in the performing arts and music fields. This year marks an expansion in space availability for selected projects, adding La Térmica in Málaga and the C3A Contemporary Creation Center in Córdoba to the usual venues of El Estadio in Sevilla and El Rey Chico in Granada.
A total of fourteen professional and two emerging artistic projects will benefit from the residency, with opportunities for public engagement through workshops and showcases of ongoing and completed works. This initiative underscores the collaboration between the Andalusian Agency and the Diputación de Málaga, enabling a concentrated effort on their respective theatrical proposals, ‘La obra del mar’ and ‘Parque,’ culminating in their debut this coming autumn.
